inFamous 2 'Update 3' released, tweaks UG

Sucker Punch has release 'Update 3' for inFamous 2, and it's a lot more exciting that it sounds. First up, two massive bosses The Devourer and Titan are now placeable characters in UGC (user-generated content) levels, which is cool. "These are mammoth characters that can be used in any way you can think of. Have the two be friends, have them fight each other, have them protect Cole. It is all up to you," explains SP.Next, the patch adds a new Mission Linking feature, which lets you link missions together in a specific order. "Shortly after the launch of inFAMOUS 2 we started to see UGC mission series ... Playing these missions in order was a little on the challenging side and we wanted to make it easier for the mission creators and the fans playing these missions, and Mission Linking does that," says SP. "You can now select another mission as a follow-up mission. Just update the properties on the Mission Start in the editor and publish all the missions associated. Once they're all on the server you'll have a link series of missions. When a player completes the mission they will be given the option to continue directly to the next linked mission."Also new is a Mission Review system, which allows you to submit a short review for any UGC mission you play. And here's a few other tweaks:- Relative Health. You can now change "Health" and "Cole's Energy" modifiers as percentages.- Volume/Monitor Reset. New "Reset When' option on Volume and Monitor logic objects lets you change how or when they can be reset after being triggered.- Author Mission Search. Search results will now display the level author's name. That's all for now, but there's more to come; check out this trailer for InFamous 2: Festival of Blood, a standalone expansion for the open-world game arriving in October. Awesome new Rage trailer stamps authority

A brand new gameplay trailer of Rage, id software's visceral new shooter, has just released - and it's a corker. The three minute trailer which you can see on our specially constructed and rather magnificent widescreen Rage Page reveals previously unseen details on the shooter, as well as unveiling the first glimpse of your ultimate post-apocalyptic opponents, the sinister Authority. It also offers a quick and lethal introduction to the game, beginning with the asteroid which smashes into earth, which consigns you to decades in cryogenic suspension in a subterranean ark.Waking into the post-apocalyptic wasteland it's a new and dangerous world that awaits, full of mutant clans, Max Max-style death races and of course id's traditional devotion to copious amounts of heavy weaponry. Most importantly though, the trailer offers you your first glimpse of the Authority, a quasi-military organisation which seems to rule the wasteland with an iron fist and one which is especially interested in acquiring ark survivors like yourself for unknown, but very ominous purposes. Power-armoured super soldiers with advanced vehicles and weaponry and a seeming fondness for arriving by jet pack, the Authority is going to prove your major obstacle as you transform from bewildered man out of time into heroic future freedom fighter.Modern combat fatigue? Not a bit of it, so what are you waiting for? Grab a wing stick, behead a mutie and go check out the trailer, then come and report back in the comments field below. CVG Staff

Square responds to Deus Ex 'racist' contr

Square Enix has responded today to reported racial controversy surrounding a character in its latest sci-fi stunner, Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Despite gaining widespread praise for its excellence, the game has apparently come under the spotlight today for allegations of inappropriate racial stereotyping in regards to an African-American character in the game - an NPC known as Letitia the Trash Lady. Lead character Adam Jenson encounters the woman digging through bins in the street before she asks him for money in what's being referred to as 'slave-era dialect' (video below). Square has issued an official response to GamesRadar in response to questioning over the matter: "Deus Ex: Human Revolution is a fictional story which reflects the diversity of the world's future population by featuring characters of various cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds," said Square. "While these characters are meant to portray people living in the year 2027, it has never been our intention to represent any particular ethnic group in a negative light."Read this praising Deus Ex: Human Revolution review to find out what really matters - why you need to buy it right now. Microsoft announces Halo Anniversary 3D

Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary is set to feature a stereoscopic 3D mode on Xbox 360, Microsoft has announced. CVG got a sneak peak at the mode at Gamescom last week, where new Halo house 343 Industries showed off the game's rebuilt Guilty Spark level with a pair of 3D glasses attached to our faces. It's definitely one of the better 3D modes we've seen in action on current-gen consoles, with the chief's monstrously overpowered magnum recoiling out of the screen."If you've got the technology you definitely want to take advantage of it," said 343's Dennis Reis."Guilty Spark is a fun level to show 3D because you're in the jungle, you've got foliage going by, plasma bolts flying over your head... it's a fun way to increase the immersion of the game and again if you've got the technology, you definitely want to take advantage of it."Halo joins a small - yet growing - list of 3D Xbox 360 games, including Call of Duty: Black Ops, Crysis 2 and just-announced addition Gears of War 3.Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary is due out on November 15. Picaroon - The Age of Online Empires

A self-proclaimed MMORTS, fans of the heralded Age of Empires series, turn-based juggernaut Civilization or the underappreciated Anno 1404 will all find something to like in Picaroon. You are given a small island to build, maintain and control with objectives to complete along the way. Coming off the back of the social video game boom brought on by Facebook, those who have fallen under its spell will find much familiarity in Picaroon.。

Questing rewards you with “specials” and other goodies. A dedicated questing panel lists available tasks and their requirements. The majority of them are basic (building a mill, attacking a pirate ship, etc.) and act as a helpful guide in growing your settlements whilst rewarding you with helpful items. The use of cards known as “specials” adds another strategic element. These one-shot deals can profoundly affect anything from construction times, to ship accuracy, to population growth.  Specials are awarded through questing and can also be bought in special packs from the in-game store.。

 。

Nevertheless, Picaroon succeeds in standing out amongst the pack. It may lack polish, but the fundamentals are there and its strong, addictive gameplay should evolve over time and keep those already playing interested. An enjoyable game in need of some slight refinement, Picaroon is a title that will appeal to both casual and non-casual real time strategy fans. Climb aboard.。

 。

Picaroon isn’t your average strategy game. Half real time strategy, half MMO – it’s an online game that strives to be different in a space populated by cookie cutter titles. Mixing traditional base building and resource gathering with competitive multiplayer, quests and trade, Picaroon is a feature packed merger of all your favourite RTS mechanics.  Sounds great in premise, but is Picaroon a complete package of powerful playing styles or a convoluted concoction that should be avoided?。

A grid overlay displays your settlements and the location of your units. With a 40x40 grid to contend with, even a simple game of Picaroon is a vast one. Players are always on the lookout for new settlements to colonize, and they are usually more than willing to take yours if it is not defended. This is where Alliances come in. Players can form their own guilds and recruit other players in an attempt to garner a foothold on a certain area. Strength is certainly in numbers when it comes to conquering other player’s settlements and the inevitable task of defending your own.。

Once you’re happy with the progression of your settlement, it’s time to build defences and forge an army. Naval warfare is an extremely important part of Picaroon, and it’s wise to begin building ships and forming fleets as soon possible as new players are only protected from attacks for the first 72 hours. Discovering and colonizing new settlements is necessary for growth, and whilst you start off small it won’t be long until you have control over a number of islands. Having ample protection across the board isn’t easy so it’s wise to build the strongest defences on your most valuable islands. There are a good number of different ships available. Bombers, scouts, submarines – there’s a vessel for every occasion, each have their own advantages and disadvantages. Forming powerful and varied fleets to work in any given situation is a challenge.。

Developing your settlement is the first order of business. Constructing farms, mines and other buildings helps increase the number of resources available in your pool. Many are required to progress to the next level of the tiered construction tree, with the most advanced buildings at the top. These bring a whole host of new and powerful building options, unit types and game enhancements. A text-based tutorial guides you through the majority of Picaroon’s features, helping you get well acquainted with the game.。

A small cash shop is used to fund the game. Using a currency known as “Doubloons”, players can purchase the aforementioned premium Specials Packs. Packs range from fleet transportation speed buffs to stat increases to help protect your settlement if you are away for the weekend. It isn’t a necessity to indulge in such luxury but there is a clear advantage to those who do. Endgame is where the most action is. Those who have donated resources to the Home Nation across the course of a game are rewarded with the most hi-tech, advanced equipment and units available. Anything from advanced submarines to nuclear weapons, it’s worth gifting any remaining resources for the chance to wheel out the big guns in the final days of play, especially if you’re not interested in the Picaroon store.。

Picaroon’s small download makes me wonder why it wasn’t a browser-based game in the first place. Playing online games at work is all the rage these days, and the game’s management and base-building aspect would be well suited to the casual audience.  There are three different game types to choose from. The first is a classic setup with a fixed time limit and frantic end-game, the second is a quick skirmish that lasts just a few hours and the final mode offers an endless, persistent game for die hard strategists. Picaroon isn’t a casual affair though, there’s depth and strategy that will appeal to the most hardcore of players, but it’s welcoming to those who don’t have a lot of spare time to watch their empire rise.。

By Neil Kewn (Murxidon) – OnRPG Journalist。

Unfortunately not everything is as polished as the engine room of my Heavy Bombship. The user interface is poor. Cluttered, ugly menu screens and dreadful navigation mechanics take the shine off the game. Picaroon falls short in the graphics department too. Settlements consist of several huts and buildings, with little or no activity from the population you strive to appease. Textures are bland and of low quality, with water effects sadly lacking. Not such a surprise considering the small download, but the overall presentation of the game becomes an eyesore after a while.。

Rise of Immortals MOBA Madness

By John Gallagher (Zaitlyn), OnRPG JournalistRise of Immortals is a great game developed by Petroglyph Games that’s hindered by things that are not the fault of the game itself. Rise of Immortals is a MOBA game, where the player controls a hero while battling repeating spawns of weak A.I units called “Creeps” that constantly advance forward towards the enemy base. There are many different types of heroes, from a support tank that heals nearby friends, to single target classes that focus on sniping enemy heroes. This is a great aspect of this game, in that each class has its own backstory as well as its own unique look and feel. The game’s main focus is its Player vs. Player content, which is a blast and well thought out.The main problem with the game’s focus on Player vs. Player content is that not many people play Rise of Immortals, which is a shame since it is obvious the developers care a lot for the game. During my time playing I was only able to get into smaller 2v2 games, and sometimes the wait for that was up to five minutes during peak times. Luckily though the game provides the player with a central hub to walk around in as well as chat with other people who you will be fighting against when the players turn comes up in the queue. This central hub also gives the player time to assign skills that are unique to each class. Each class gets its own skill tree of offensive bonuses, defensive bonuses and a skill tree only usable by the current class. Mainly these skills are passive benefits such as more health or mana regeneration. These skills carry over with the player for as long as they play, but at the beginning of each battle the player has to earn the right to use big hitting spells by gaining veteran points, which is a different stat than skill level ups. This allows each character to develop. Being able to customize one’s character allows the player a sense of achievement and uniquenessThe game does not do a good job of easing the player into the experience. At the beginning of the game, the player is given a choice of hero and then is placed in the central hub with no clue on what any button does or where to begin. They give the player a practice arena, but even that’s very bare bones. Luckily, the game is pretty simple to understand, each hero has four unique skills designed around their role in battle. A support tank has an area heal for example, while a mage’s skills focus mainly on long range spells that damage a large area. Each time the player joins a new battle, these action skills are reset to zero, and the player gains the right to use them as you kill enemy creeps, heroes or defensive towers. The player levels up fairly fast, so within three to four minutes of a battle the player has his or her hero tuned to their specifications. The hero’s stats can also be affected by items that can be bought at a shop in the main base. The player earns gold for these items by killing enemy units, and these items can also be upgraded with gold for even more benefits. Careful management of gold to either increase the hero’s strengths or decrease his weaknesses to balance him out is a big part of this game. The graphics for Rise of Immortals are a mix of well made backgrounds and hero models with bland creeps, textures, and building details. The art style of the different heroes is very interesting. Every hero is unique and does not look anything like what I expected when I first began playing. The screenshots I saw as well as the website gave an impression of a standard foray into a fantasy land we’ve all been to before. But when the player loads up the character select screen, and a giant walking treant makes up one of the tank heroes, and a cyborg dwarf with a rifle makes up one of the single target focused heroes, it was refreshing. The spells and skills of the heroes are well detailed and easily noticeable. Heroes look great, with smooth, detailed animations. The sound effects are also great; the battle music does a great job of increasing the mood. The announcer is also easily heard and keeps the player updated on the action, such as when an ally dies or a defensive tower falls. The maps that the heroes fight on are detailed and varied. Bushes that obscure the opponent’s line of sight provide ample opportunities for ambushes. And if the player feels that one path of attack is being locked down too well, the map designers provide many different methods of getting under the opponents skin. The maps are the perfect size, with running times from home base short enough to not be boring, but long enough that an attacker can punish the player for not defending their towers properly. One feature that Rise of Immortals truly excels in is map variety. There are literally a dozen maps you can play on, a rarity in the MOBA genre. All in all, I think Rise of Immortals is a great game that simply needs more players. That the developers love the game is obvious, but at the moment of writing there simply is not a big enough community to support it. Rise of Immortals has the framework to be a great game, but it simply needs more exposure and more fan word-of-mouth to increase its competitive potential; that part of the game is balanced, during my time with the game I felt I hardly ever had a “cheap” death. If I died, or my team lost, it was because I was outplayed. No one hero is chosen more than any other, which adds to the replayability of the game. Because of this, the player is never left groaning at a loading screen because there is yet another team of Hero X or Hero Y needing to be conquered. Rise of Immortals is a very fun game that any strategy or MOBA fan should give a try.Graphics: 6 out of 10: MOBA games aren't known for their graphics. This isn't one of Rise of Immortal's strong points.Sound: 10 out of 10: Great sound effects, great music, great announcer. Can't complain here!Controls: 8 out of 10: The default control setup is kind of wonky, but you can reprogram inputs to make it work for you.Replay ability: 8 out of 10: With several heroes, each with their own levels as well as skill points, this game can keep you interested long term.

Free 3DS NES games getting multiplayer up

Nintendo has revealed that the downloadable NES games to be offered free to existing 3DS owners as part of the company's Ambassador program will include "additional features such as multiplayer simultaneous play". Nintendo set up the 3DS Ambassador program to keep existing 3DS owners happy after it announced last week that it will slash almost a third off the console's price next month - less than six months after its launch. Existing owners just need to log onto the eShop before August 12 to qualify, and from September 1 they will be able to download 10 NES games and 10 GBA games for free. Nintendo has clarified what it meant in the original press when it said that 'updated' versions would be released later in the year that Ambassadors can download at no extra cost. First up, it's not 3D visuals. "These will be 2D games. They are not 3D Classics," said Nintendo, before going on to reveal: "When the NES games become available to the general public later this year, they will include additional features such as multiplayer simultaneous play. Ambassadors will then be able to download those updated version at no cost."Nintendo refused to comment further on how long the downloads would be available for, or what the full list of titles will be, but with games like Super Mario Bros., Donkey Kong Jr., Balloon Fight, Ice Climber and The Legend of Zelda on NES, and Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3, Mario Kart: Super Circuit, Metroid Fusion, WarioWare, Inc.: Minigame Mania and Mario vs. Donkey Kong on GBA confirmed, you'll want to get on it quick.

The Myth of the WoW Killer

Now, AoC is still on its second expansion, Rise of the Godslayer, with most of the bugs from its launch fixed. However, AoC still fights against its bad reputation to prove to players that the game is worth trying a second time.。

 。

 。

 。

Of course I’m not disregarding titles that have been truly unique experiences (Champions Online for one) however they have yet to achieve the “legendary” status that WoW Killers seem to have.。

 。

 。

 。

 。

 。

 。

For me though, I say that this title is rubbish and a myth. And I’m saying it with conviction.。

As far as I am concerned, I stand by my call that the WoW killer would stay as myth unless I see games that can uproot what WoW has established. Only time will tell if that would ever come to pass.。

 。

 。

By: Vincent Haoson, OnRPG Journalist。

The WoW playerbase was immediately affected come AoC’s launch. However after a few months, players started returning to WoW after experiencing Hyboria for themselves, disappointed with what they have experienced. The majority of those returning complained of bugs. If Funcom would have given the game development a bit more time, history might have taken another path.。

 。

Before anyone would raise their arms in utter outrage on that statement (if I guess there would still be anyone who would care for that) I would say in my defense that I’m not a WoW fanboy. My WoW experience took only two or three months of my life. In that span of time most of it was spent as a Blood Elf Paladin (all types) and I stopped playing because (1) my budget can’t afford me to keep on playing (2) I really needed to get away from WoW before I got too addicted and stopped working all together.。

 。

People who have been immersed in the MMO scene for the past decade for sure wouldn’t find this “title” new. In the off chance that you are part of that rare group of people, I would say that you have been living under a rock that’s under another rock. In the past decade there have been MMO titles that have been called as such because people believed that these titles would finally steal the crown off WoW as one of the biggest game titles in the MMO industry.。

 。

I could list on and on what WAR did wrong, but in the end players decided to just cancel their subscription. The supposed WoW-killer with a killer budget failed to even put a dent on the WoW front, and now WAR is slowly losing its servers one by one.。

 。

 。

 。

 。

Warhammer Online was considered as the biggest contender against WoW. I personally would have to agree that the game had a lot of potential. It allowed new players to get into PvP from level 1. It had a rich history based on the Warhammer franchise before it became an MMO, ensuring a huge following of promotional fanboys leading up to launch.。

However, try as developers might, WoW would not budge since up till now it  is still going strong. Sadly, as the years continue I can only say that the idea of an MMO being able to defeat WoW is more and more becoming a wishful dream—myth-like if you will, especially with the trend of MMOs these days.。

Developers have stopped trying to be different but instead went with the safe route of getting elements from what WoW has set and just merely adding a few tiny pinches of “creativity” into their games. Of course who could blame them? After seeing titles burn out after going against WoW developers would then prefer to just get some sort of return regardless if they are copying WoW or not.。

The lack of any attempts on developers to becoming bigger than WoW and just settling for something that can rake in some cash is one of the reasons why I think that the idea of a true WoW Killer is a myth.  Developers these days either would not take risks or are that just lazy and create game, after game, after game that would follow the WoW formula.。

 。

The current set of MMOs being released lately has started to incorporate elements of WoW into their games. May it be in the way of the job class, skill tree or even the interface, you constantly see MMOs trying to copy WoW elements rather than innovate away from them.。

Also if you are wondering why I only used these two as example when there are a lot of MMOs out there who may have been presented as a WoW killer one way or another, my reason is that AoC and WAR was heavily marketed as the WoW killer.。

The lack of any attempt to be better than WoW really has strangled the growth of the MMO scene. In the east alone- WoW clone after WoW clone have been released and I don’t see it stopping anytime soon.。

There are still people out there who chronically title MMOs as the possible WoW killer that we’ve all been waiting for. As far as I recall, I only remember of two BIG titles (in terms of marketing) that has been crowned by the gaming public as the “chosen one”.。

 。

 。

Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures (back then) was one of the major MMO titles that would’ve given Blizzard a run for its money. The game presented a whole new gameplay aspect never tried in an MMORPG. The worlds were wonderfully made, and the women NPCs were downright beautiful. It was set as one of the highly anticipated titles to come out back then.。

Upon the game’s release, players flocked into the Warhammer servers hoping to enjoy what Mythic has promised. However, upon experiencing the game first-hand, players would slowly but surely leave the game for WoW again (or another MMO). WAR had failed to maintain proper class and population balancing which is integral in a PvP oriented MMO. The promised big battles in WAR failed to deliver when the server itself did not live up to the hype and crashed hard once 50-100 players flocked into the same battleground.。

To make things clear, WAR and AoC aren’t bad games. In fact, if they were better run by the companies who managed them, I bet WoW wouldn’t be comfortably sitting on its perch as the MMO who pwned them all.

BioWare, Peter Moore get EA promotions

A reshuffle of EA's management has seen former EA Sports boss Peter Moore promoted, and Mass Effect developer BioWare elevated to one of the company's four publishing labels. BioWare will now sit alongside EA Games, EA Sports and EA Play, all overlooked by another freshly-promoted exec, former EA Games president Frank Gibeau.Ex-EA Mobile GM Barry Cottle will now head up EA Interactive, the company said on its news blog, which now includes Playfish, Pogo, EA Mobile, EA's partnership with Hasbro, the online and mobile business in Asia and soon, PopCap.EA CEO John Riccitiello said: "First, I think it's a great reflection on EA that we are able to tap so much world-class leadership from within our own ranks. The depth of talent and leadership in this company is inspiring. "Second, as I look across EA and back on its history, I come to an important realization. The people who succeed here are the ones who map their creative vision over a deep understanding of what our consumers want. Our Label structure reflects that strategy. It creates a close partnership between developers and product marketers that connects the creative process to our consumers." Andy Robinson

Halo 4 director quits, cites 'lack of exc

Halo 4's not out until late 2012 but Microsoft has already seen a key departure from its dev team in creative director Ryan Payton, who's confirmed he has left the company. The ex-343 Industries man - who joined the Halo 4 team after his acclaimed work as assistant producer on Metal Gear Solid 4 - put his decision down to not being "creatively excited" for the project anymore.Payton's now started up his own studio, Camouflaj, and is already working on two new titles."I had a great run at Microsoft," Payton told Kotaku. "I don't regret one day of it. But after a few years, there came a point where I wasn't creatively excited about the project anymore." "The Halo I wanted to build was fundamentally different and I don't think I had built enough credibility to see such a crazy endeavor through," he added.Payton's work on MGS4 included updating the series' often clunky controls, plus balancing the game and story for international audiences. "It was all a crash course on AAA game development," Payton said of his MGS days. "It was an experience that prepared me for a big budget, high risk project like Halo."Though his NDA prevents him from talking about his Halo 4 work in depth, Payton confirmed he was very much focused on the story, working with Halo franchise director Frank O'Connor and the creative team to develop the Halo universe. He also hired MGS4's audio director Sotaro Tojima as Halo 4's audio director. "There's no doubt that his Japanese sensibilities will bring a lot to the new game and I'm confident the game is going to sound epic," he said. Andy Robinson

RuneScape Clan Citadels expansion launche

Jagex has released the massive Clan Citadels expansion for its popular free-to-play MMO RuneScape. The update allows RuneScape's clans to build their own floating citadel, a customisable castle in the sky for players to meet, socialise and develop their own games using a new sandbox battlefield editor.Any clan with five or more members can take ownership of their own citadel and start creating user-generated combat scenarios and multiplayer games."Clans can create any activity, including simple capture-the-flag games, deathmatches, ball games, mazes, and any combination of these," Jagex says. "Once the battlegrounds are fine-tuned, players can challenge other clans to participate in large-scale battles and competitions."Each clan's Citadel can be upgraded through seven tiers, unlocking more space, skilling hotspots, impressive elements and special features. These include skilling zones, portal grounds, meeting areas, a senate, dragon perch, and party room." RuneScape VP Daniel Clough adds: "Today is a historic day for RuneScape, as we release the biggest expansion of the year and our largest ever community update. We have been looking for a unique and innovative way to provide new multiplayer features to the game, and we are hugely excited to see what the community makes of this update."The popularity of our in-game clans is staggering, with more than 1.3 million players signing up since our last clan update in April and, as you would expect, the level of anticipation for this update is unprecedented. Our ambitious plan has always been to make RuneScape's clan support the envy of the MMO world, and we are confident that Clan Citadels can do just that."

Yakuza Dead Souls Trademark Suggests Wes

Sega's zombified Yakuza game, Yakuza: Of the End, arrived in Japan on June 9 of this year. Fans of the series in other parts of the world have been waiting for some news of a global release, and it seems that they might soon have an answer.Sega picked up a trademark in Europe for Yakuza: Dead Souls (via CVG), which seems like a safe bet as a more English-speaking audience-friendly title for the zombie-infused Yakuza game. This is in no way confirmation that a Western Of the End release is coming, but it's a good start. The Yakuza series is a funny beast. Part-open world RPG, part-brawler, part-minigame fest, part-something completely unclassifiable, it is capable of hitting any number of gaming pleasure centers in the space of a single hour. Adding zombies to that mix seems like a recipe for awesome; here's hoping fans in the U.S. and Europe get to find out.Source: OHIM (search trademark number 010291482)

Diablo 3 requires constant internet conne

Blizzard has revealed that the long-awaited Diablo 3 will require players to be constantly connected to the internet, even after an initial authentication process has been completed. According to Blizzard's executive vice president of game design Rob Pardo, this requirement is due to the implementation of numerous new Battle.net and Auction House features. Those features include the following:A persistent friends list.Cross-game chat via the RealID system.Persistent characters that are stored server-side (no more having to play online once every 90 days, nor item duplication cheats).Persistent party system.Player-versus-player and public game matchmaking.Dynamic drop-in/out for co-opLarger item stash that gets shared among all of your characters (at the moment, up to 10)The auction house (allows players to sell loot for real money)The Achievement system and detailed stat-tracking, both of which feed into the final point:The Banner system, a visual way to display your skills that take into account earned achievements, the number of PVP victories etc. Banners can be clicked to teleport to other players.Blizzard's confirmed that Diablo 3 will be playable at GamesCom in Cologne, which takes place mid-August.

THQ MX Vs. ATV Alive DLC experiment was

THQ CEO Brian Farrell has admitted that an experimental new pricing structure the publisher tried with MX vs. ATV Alive 'was not a success'.In an attempt to "take some of our learnings from the free-to-play market and apply them to the console world", THQ released the off road racer at the budget price of $39.99, with less content on the disc than you'd expect in a full-price title, but placing a bigger focus on regular and substantial paid DLC packs that would allow players to selectively purchase the elements of the game they wanted. But Farrell said in a recent earnings call that while the reduced entry price "gave us good acceleration of sales, it just wasn't enough to drive the installed base to what we wanted to do". Ignoring factors such as the poor reviews for the game (63 and 62-out-of-100 Metacritic averages on Xbox and PS3 respectively), Farrell deemed the pricing structure a failure. "Our takeaway there is it's not a great model in the console market because with the high fixed cost of goods in the current console model, you can't get the price point low enough to drive that installed base for the client out there to drive the DLC."We thought the idea was (and still is) an interesting one - just poorly executed. The game, to start with, just wasn't good enough; the on-disc content was overly minimal to point of it feeling like a rip off despite the slightly lower price tag. But the thought of being able to pay for the parts of a game you want and leave out the parts you don't is appealing. We'd be interested to see how this build-it-yourself structure would work with a more desirable franchise - like Call of Duty, for example - and with a starting package that warrants the entry price tag and better-timed, more substantial DLC releases that truly allow gamers to craft the game they want.

Shrek and other DreamWorks characters go

DreamWorks and Activision have announced DreamWorks Super Star Kartz, a racing game staring DreamWorks characterz such az Shrek that, we're sure, will be NOTHINGZ like Mario Kart. At allz. Nopez. 14 characters from DreamWorks' movies Shrek, Madagascar, How To Train Your Dragon and Monsters Vs. Aliens will turn up for arcade races in which you'll be able to "speed, jump, power-up and boost" through karting courses no doubt based on environments from the films. It'll also have stunts, weapons and "hilarious" commentary from Madagascar lemur King Julien. Battle, Circuit and Time Trial modes will feature, along with four-player split-screen multiplayer "on consoles". There's no mention of online play or any multiplayer for handhelds, which is worrying.DreamWorks Super Star Kartz, with a 'z' because they didn't get the memo about random 'z's in titles not being cool anymore, will be out 'this holiday season' for DS, 3DS, Wii, Xbox and PS3. Recently appointed European PlayStation boss Jim Ryan claimed last month that PS3 is comfortably outselling its rivals in mainland Europe, but that isn't the case in Britain. Dragon Nest The Start of a Revolution

By Thomas vonWolffradt (SomePlatypus), OnRPG Tech WizardCo-Written by Darren Henderson (DizzyPW), OnRPG Editor-in-ChiefNow it's rare that I go out of my way to spend 30 hours in a game to write up a game review. Normally these time intensive projects are given out to one of OnRPG's writing staff to do over the course of a month. However, in Dragon Nest I see the potential of a new way to play MMOs that prior to it has never been fully perfected. Dragon Nest represents the beginning of a new horizon in MMO gaming in which MMORPG fans and action console players can unite under one banner of gaming greatness. And since many of its brethren in the action revolution are still quite some development time away from release, Dragon Nest gives us an opportunity to experience the future of MMO gaming today!Dragon Nest takes place in a world that has been ravaged by war many years ago and has just recently reestablished peace. Although everything seems calm on the surface, a hidden war rages in the shadows between the Dragons and their Cultists and a small group of freedom fighters known as the Adventurer's Guild. Though the Adventurer's Guild is nearly powerless against the Dragon Cultists, an ancient elf with a bad attitude named Argenta stands alone as the only warrior with the power to prevent their aims. That is, until you enter the fray! Now you must enter an uneasy alliance with Argenta to save a descendant of the ancients from the clutches of the Dragons. There are currently four starting classes you can choose from. In terms of PvE prowess, they are all virtually equal and yet specialized enough to make each unique and fun to try. At level 15 you are able to take a test to unlock your second class upgrade and further specialize yourself into one of 8 total classes.Sorceress: These AoE masters bring immense pain to the battlefield but require meticulous timing and aim to do so effectively. Some of their long channeling times with long cooldowns make it important that they have protection so as not to waste their potential. At level 15 they may become Elementalists or Mystics. Elementalists specialize in harmful status effects like slow and wield unimaginable destructive AoE power. Mystics can follow the path of light or darkness, gaining insane armor piercing damage and gravity controlling AoE spells that can decimate an entire battlefield in one spell.Cleric: This isn't your dad's cleric. Clerics in Dragon Nest have a nasty bite in addition to their support magic. They fight on the front line with weapons like maces, dealing holy light magic that stuns their hapless foes into submission. Those who go the path of the Paladin will become nearly invincible tanks that sacrifice some of their support status in exchange for rendering enemies useless in battle. Priests on the other hand take support spells to an entirely new level, making their allies invulnerable and bringing massive AoE holy magic down around the battlefield.Archer: Archers are medium to long range dps that are effective at sweeping the enemy off their feet. While also specializing in AoE damage, theirs tends to be higher damage than mages but with a smaller range of effect. At level 15 they can follow the path of a Sharpshooter or Acrobat. Sharpshooters gain immense mobility, range, and are one of the most active classes in the game for attacking an enemy while in mid-air. Acrobats abandon their range safety and instead become a localized whirlwind of damage, knock ups, and knock backs.Warrior: What warriors lack in damage, they make up for with impressive comboing abilities. They can run, dodge, roll, and slam to keep on top of an opponent until they die. Though restricted to only melee weapons, said melee weapons have such large hit areas that you practically can't miss. Mercenaries are the most heavily armored character in the game, specializing in one-on-one confrontations in which they simply outlast any opponent blow for blow. Those seeking more active combat can follow the path of the Swordsman, engaging in long damaging combo attacks that are nearly impossible to break free from. At higher levels, Swordsmen can also learn wide sweeping AoE skills to give them range damage as well. The world of Dragon Nest is broken down in a similar fashion to another action game published by Nexon called Vindictus. In hub towns you learn about the story, adjust and enhance gear, pick up quests, and learn skills. Then you set out, alone or in groups of up to 4, into the instanced outer world in which you can pick up further quests, break down gear into crafting material, and select instanced dungeons and difficulty settings. The dungeons themselves start out simple and then grow progressively more challenging. Simple run and stab goblins eventually lead to sword and board goblins that will actively blow against attacks. Slow casting lightning mages eventually become fast teleporting massive AoE casting ice mages that can really ruin your day should you fail to dodge a single spell combo. And then in the expansion, Saint's Haven, you will face fire mages that bring a whole new meaning to the term DoT.So what makes this all so revolutionary? It's 100% based on your reaction speed, knowledge of your character's skills, and aiming every attack FPS style. Every class is provided enough utility to get through just about any situation thrown at them, assuming you know your class well enough to do so. Acrobats with fast reactions can jump and roll through a barrage of spells to disable the caster. Mystics can hold off legions of goblins with a few well placed gravity wells. Mercenaries can stand toe to toe with heavily armored ogres and break their defenses with a few well placed rolls and axe slams. Or you can get your face smashed in after a 5 second duration of enemy combos that leave you sitting in the corner frantically drinking potions.Where this system of combat really shines in the boss battles. Some of the best designed bosses can usually fly or teleport, have unique defensive abilities, and are able to smash your attempt to combo them apart with strong AoE skills. A gargoyle you face early on will zoom around the map, constantly summoning goblin minions to delay you. After shooting blasts of homing energy orbs he can land and turn into stone, increasing his defense infinitely and rapidly regaining hp until you stun him out of the stance. A later boss hovers over the arena out of reach and sprays the battlefield with poisonous stingers. Just as you think you've dodged them all he slams down on top of you dealing massive damage, forcing you to divide your attention between dodging darts and timing a jump to get out of the combo alive. I can honestly say I have never had so much fun fighting bosses in an MMO, and even in console games bosses were rarely as exciting as this.A downside to Dragon Nest that I have seen all too often on the forums is people who claim 'I got bored and quit at level 2x.' Even with a game as fun as this, inevitable boredom will always set in for some people. Oh wait that never happened to me because I played with my friend DizzyPW every time. If you aren't playing Dragon Nest with a friend, you are depriving yourself greatly of the true experience Dragon Nest has to offer.By teaming up with friends, not only do you have someone to share the experience with, you can take on the harder challenges in Dragon Nest much earlier. There is just an insane thrill taking on Abyss mode dungeons with your friend when you are level 19 and 18 and the recommended difficulty is four level 21s. Teamwork is put to the test as you constantly rescue each other from hordes of enemies, and set up ultimate team combo attacks to devastate a legion of monsters with a 500 hit combo. Our best example was our Mystic Acrobat team. DizzyPW would roll-jump into a group of 40 monsters and hit Marionette to shoot out a string of arrows that pulls enemies towards him. I would then cover the ground with poison and begin opening up a massive gravity well above DizzyPW as he danced around the legion of mobs.Once the gravity well opened I would blow all my cooldowns launching every magic spell in my possession as the enemy's were pulled into a central point. DizzyPW would blast then with a fan shaped archer skill and then proceed to bounce on top of the heads of enemies, culminating in the extremely powerful Acrobat skill 'Eagle Dive' in which he flies to earth at maximum speed dealing huge damage figures to all in the area upon landing. Seeing the ground covered with a legion of loot where a legion of zombies formerly stumbled is intensely satisfying.Besides the intangible satisfaction from zombie hunting with a friend, there are also many benefits offered for teaming up. The most particularly important is the PWR system. PWR is a system that allows casual players to not fall as far behind hardcore players by giving you experience bonuses for the first few dungeons you run in a day. If you team up with friends and run multiple dungeons successfully in a row, the game gives you discounts on how much PWR is spent on each dungeon run to keep you going at this bonus level longer. Also players running Abyss mode will only have to spend one key to unlock the bunny chest at the end, providing very useful goodies such as NPC gifts. This game goes beyond the call of duty to give players tons of things to keep them occupied. Every dungeon has a dozen or more achievements to be obtained, some giving titles with special stat bonuses. In addition billboards reside outside every dungeon to give players additional challenges (and rewards) for performing certain actions like collecting skulls from graves. An addicting side quest exists in which you can make friends with NPCs and improve relations by running quests or giving gifts to them. Eventually the NPCs will start to give you gifts back to help with your equipment strengthening. Also by befriending NPCs you gain faction points with one of three groups that can later be traded for all kinds of goodies in Saint's Haven. Various recipes exist for mixing lesser gifts you obtain to make greater gifts as well, and it really adds some flavor to the side quest when you have an item that two NPCs both love and you have to decide who to befriend and who to ignore.A circus also exists in which you and your friends can take part in crazy mini-game events to earn tickets. Some notably fun ones include a treasure hunt in which you and your friends are locked in separate rooms and must battle until united in the main room to face a super boss. Another epic circus event is the Goblarta Goblins in which Xerxes orders you to destroy the 300 Goblarta goblins in an arena style death match! DizzyPW is working on bringing a video of this epic event to OnRPG in the near future. Most MMOs would consider this enough for a launch title. Dragon Nest pushes the envelope further. You can take part in the arena to face other players in PvP battles or the Temple of Darkness where you team up with 3 friends to face an endless gauntlet of increasingly strong monsters, with prizes waiting for the heartiest of adventurers.I wouldn't be able to talk about Dragon Nest without mentioning the arena, considering this game won E3 2011's best PvP award. Personally I have some gripes to say about the arena. At E3 things were fantastic because it was essentially a LAN party, and when everyone shares the same ping the PvP in Dragon Nest is tough to beat. Each class is really well balanced at most levels, and artificially increased defense and HP helps prevent people who cash shopped to power or hardcore power levelers from dominating the game too heavily. Team PvP is especially fun because, as explained earlier with the Mystic Acrobat super combo, you can really perform some impressive combos on your hapless foes. Also in team PvP certain classes like the Mystic and Priest become much more viable as they require teammates to effectively unleash some of their greater attacks. Now enter the officially sanctioned ladder matches, that are fought only on a one-on-one basis. In this situation the paladin and swordsman classes hands down destroy almost any opponent with their superior combo abilities, endless knockdowns, and overpowered stuns. This only gets worse when you introduce ping issues and classes like Mystics and Acrobats with hard to land attacks are aiming at a shadow of where an enemy actually is. The swordsman and mercenaries especially have such large hit targets with their melee swings and fast movement speed that you will often begin to fly through the air from the opening of a combo attack long before the actual melee fighter is visually within range to harm you. Not to mention you better bring some heavy hitting skills if you even think you are going to stun these opponents as they charge haphazardly through a barrage of fire with little care for the tiny amounts of damage it inflicts. As such I recommend players stick with the team battles. As long as you have a teammate to interrupt, endless combo attacks aren't possible. With more targets on the battlefield, you will also have an easier time of landing attacks, and the fun factor increases for support classes as well. Best of all is you still earn medals from non-ladder matches that are used to upgrade weapons with special enhancements!Dragon Nest has so many nuances going for it that it's impossible to sum all its parts up in a single review. I will just mention that the crafting system is quite in-depth and will ensure players spend hours in every part of the game to build the greatest weapons and armor possible. Even after 30 hours in the game I'm still discovering new features like this and at level 25 there is plenty more to be seen in this game.Graphics are simple enough and customizable enough that almost anyone should be able to experience the joys of this game. The cutscenes, side quests, and main quests are also some of the best written in MMO history and should keep all but the most hardcore power levelers delayed a bit to read through them. The cash shop doesn't present too much of a power gap to players though I would recommend picking up some inventory and bank expansion slots before anything else or you will go mad trying to manage all the nick knacks you pick up in this game. If you are one of the few that haven't experienced Dragon Nest yet, then grab a friend (or three), divvy up the class selection, and get to cracking some Dragon Cultist skulls!Graphics – 3 (Watered down character models are balanced by impressive spell effects) Controls – 5 (For a front runner in the action MMO genre, Dragon Nest controls flawlessly) Features – 5 (I never felt wanting for more things to do in this game) Customization – 4 (While graphical customization is minimal, skill trees and armor crafting balance things nicely) Community – 4 (While I didn't talk with the community much, there always seemed to be things going on around me)

Following Manchester City's 'unprecedented' FIFA 12 deal, Mohamed Al Fayed's boys have put pen to paper to receive a number of game-related benefits - even if none of them sound quite up to par to Blue Moon's "digital channels" and 3D head scans of the entire team.Throughout the season, Fulham and EA Sports will be holding a range of Club events and experiences that Fulham fans will be able to get involved in.These include a bespoke FIFA 12 trailer (that's the vehicle kind) which will be present at Craven Cottage on selected match days, jimmy choo boots, EA Sports branding on the LED perimeter board and a Pro Player Tournament at the club's training ground to determine which Fulham player is best.EA will also be producing a Fulham specific FIFA 12 game sleeve which fans will be able to download for free from the club's website (www.fulhamfc.com) around the launch of FIFA 12. "Mass Effect 3 is simultaneously a couple of different things; a thrilling and epic conclusion to the trilogy as we promised our fans we'd provide for Commander Shepard," he added. Games are too expensive (but Skyrim isn't

Games are too expensive and the industry would benefit from lower price points, cheap jimmy choo, reckons Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim director Todd Howard. Speaking in the latest issue of PSM3, the Bethesda designer argues that $60 is "a lot of money for entertainment" - but insists that Skyrim is one title that's truly giving gamers their quid's worth."I've thought for a long time that games are too expensive," he said, adding that "I don't put us in that category of course - for what we give you, for sixty bucks or however many 'quid' it is. "That's a lot of money for entertainment, so I think the good news is that in certain markets - PC,jimmy choo boots, iPhone, mobile - we can see prices coming down."But I do think industry-wide we would benefit from more games out at $19 or $29. I would try more games. Because I'm not going to try a game for $60. It's a tough decision."That's why people read reviews and previews, because it's not only a money decision, it's a time-investment decision. It's not like going to a movie."Howard's comments echo those of Namco Bandai Partners VP Olivier Comte, who said in an interview he thinks the £40 price point is fair for developers but for the consumer it is simply too much."From September to December there are three new blockbusters every week, jimmy choo outlet, and consumers just can't afford to buy all that," he said. "I feel all the big video game companies need to join together in a worldwide summit to discuss the future of our industry. I think we have to pull our thoughts together."Buy the new look PSM3 online and have it delivered to your door. Andy Robinson

Picaroon Interview - RTS Meets MMO

By Bryan King (Bryan), OnRPG JournalistPicaroon is a brand new MMORTS that prides itself on mixing time-based rounds based on player preference, such as rounds being able to last anywhere from 90 minutes to four weeks. Today, I got the chance to sit down with Paul Baker of Nice Technology to discuss Picaroon.Nice Technology was formed in 2009 to commercialise the company’s unique MMOG engine (AliceServer), develop the software further and self publish games made with it. Nice Technology has developed two titles: Tronji, a children’s MMOG created for BBCW and Ragdoll and Picaroon, both of which are in open beta.Picaroon, has been produced by a small but dedicated team: Toby Simpson, creator of AliceServer, designer and producer; Mark Ashton, designer, producer and lead programmer; Greg Brown, lead artist; Gavin Rudd client, web and database programmer; Gary Wood IT network and support manager; and Paul Baker, general manager. The credit here goes to Mark Ashton the co-designer, producer and lead client programmer on Picaroon. We knew that the game had a swashbuckling theme, but title ideas with the word pirate in it just didn't feel right. Then Mark came up with Picaroon which means the same thing and it sounds much nicer as all words with two 'o's in do. Of course there's also the issue that if we mention pirates in the title, it sets people's expectations to a historic setting whereas we've deliberately based Picaroon in some suitably grim future to allow us to pick and choose what technology we wish to use and not be limited to cannons, swords and parrots.Picaroon is played out in the future where all that remains of the Earth’s surface are thousands and thousands of small tropical islands – most of them volcanic in nature. Now tidally locked, half of the planet is in perpetual darkness and no-one knows what is there (yet!). The remaining people battle it out for control of the land that’s available to feed the power of a few massive warlords descended from empires of times long past. At least that’s the story as told around camp fires these days! What we really wanted was an excuse to mix old and new and apply a little odd styling of our own. If we based a pirate sea game in the past we’d not have been able to have super submarines, dirigibles and weapons of mass destruction. We wanted some familiarity and the ability to continue to uncover cool new things in future games: the tidally locked thing is part of that—there’s a whole half of the world that is dark and unexplored…Picaroon is a RTS: a genre that is traditionally very hard to transplant into the MMOG arena. Part of this is that it is technically quite difficult to manage hundreds of thousands of units owned by different players on a single server and game instance. We have created some exciting new technology that lets us do this and we wished to show it off as best as we could! Also, of course, because it's a technical and design challenge, we were aware that any large-scale MMOG real-time strategy game would be unique, and we would be providing something to the market that was not already present.Picaroon is also unique for a couple of reasons. Firstly it’s got this end-game phase where players who tribute a threshold amount of resources to the warlords get access to some pretty amazing extra weaponry at the end of the game which is designed to encourage some pretty vast wars. Secondly, we have worked very hard to establish a path of development that lets us introduce new game types that allow the game to appeal to more and more people. Obviously we’re also in a situation where unlike RPGs, RTSs tend to have a single winner. That can make for a lot of losers – so it’s vital that we have many, many ways to win, both small and large. We’re proud of the results of that work and we’ve yet to scratch the surface. So far, so good! The reaction we have had has been excellent. We have worked very hard during beta to listen carefully to what our players say and respond accordingly when producing updates. The open beta has given us the opportunity to listen to a wider audience and to learn what our game feels like to play for the first time. We want Picaroon to be successful and the only way we will achieve that is through keeping our ears more open than our mouths! We have received many suggestions from testers about the balance of units, the structure of alliances, the scoring of points, and specials! During beta we have made many changes to each of these areas as well as introducing some cool new features such as the airship and the technology centre. In addition, we’ve made progress to releasing a beta version of Persistent Picaroon. In a large scale MMORTS such as Picaroon where players can control hundreds of units in real time, one of the biggest challenges is to balance the gameplay between paying players, free players, individual players, alliances and then particular units. This has been meticulously undertaken over a period of beta testing. The biggest technical challenge was to update the graphics engine so that it can display the hundreds of ships of alliances members in a shared scene without performance degradation in the heat of vast battles!Picaroon's end-game is something that we're very pleased with. It's a feature where towards the end of any game, the rules change a little and the players that have given away the most resources through a tribute system get some powerful new units and specials that are only valid for the duration of that game. We have found that this encourages everyone to go to war and that is entertaining and engaging for all the players.Plus we really like the newer units, the airship and technology centre, plus our original favourite the super submarine!Well the longest game we’ve had to date is approximately four weeks but we do have Persistent Picaroon up our sleeves! We spent a lot of time balancing the game and created rules so that cash players cannot ‘buy’ a win by using very powerful specials. The intention is to trade time for money but not necessarily a place on the leader board. We also offer vanity specials such as banners and in the future stylish character models for paying customers. To underline what we were saying above, some of the most powerful specials cannot be purchased with cash but can only rarely be found or bought with in game gold!We hope that by presenting the game in as simple a way as possible we will encourage all game players to try the game. We have kept the barriers low: the game is free-to-play which should help encourage maximum trial and, in addition, it’s only a 60MB client download, incredibly light weight for a game of this genre. To support this we are also presenting Picaroon in a variety of flavours: Skirmish Picaroon can be played out over an hour; Classic Picaroon can be played over a week or weeks; Persistent Picaroon which is in closed beta will invite players to retain a foothold in the game for as long as they can. There’s something there for everybody whether they are familiar with RTSs, MMOs or not.We hope that the game will have broad appeal! We've added features such as overnight build-queues and automatic building upgrade plans as well as specials that will protect your islands for several days. Hopefully this will help balance the game for those that have lots of time versus those that do not.Having said that, we recognise that it is difficult to get this sort of balance perfect and it is something that we have spent a lot of time attempting to perfect! We continue to experiment with lots of game configurations. We'll have to see what our players suggest!During development we have gradually introduced achievements, friend get friend schemes as well as the ability to share some accomplishments on Facebook. We will continue to add features for alliances and are also considering implementing an overarching faction structure above alliances. Further work is also planned to promote and share alliance achievements. Our immediate plans are to maximise the creative possibilities of the Picaroon concept. We are just about to test the persistent version of Picaroon. We also have plans for new PvE features such as weather, monster octopuses, pirate owned islands and giant squid, and we want to develop a super alliance (the factions mentioned above) concept and other new units. We also want to give a quick spring clean to the UI so that we can simplify and make things even more intuitive. After Picaroon we plan to develop a commercial version of Tronji and then also another project which we hope will be really innovative and fully exploit the possibilities of our technology: think of ever changing organic worlds teeming with artificial life, a world where players can shape the game experience and environment– we are getting really excited and hope OnRPG’s readers might be too!Yes, we’ve always harboured plans to create some mobile applications so that players can stay in touch with critical aspects of their empire, as Picaroon never sleeps.Absolutely! Come and help us make this a great game. We know that we need to keep our ears open and we are aware that the game has only progressed as far as it has because we’ve listened hard to what our players are telling us. We’re always open to advice and if any of your community feels that Picaroon is the game for them, then we’d be delighted to have them and to hear what they have to say!

Xotic Review Freaky Alien Fun

By Michael Sagoe (Mikedot), OnRPG JournalistIndie game developer WXP Games has just unleashed a strange new title that’s as fun as it is freaky. Xotic is an arcade style first person shooter that’s all about racking up mean scores for killing enemies, grabbing power ups and starting off huge chain reactions. It’s about as straight forward as a game can get, but let’s see if the core gameplay has enough going for it to warrant the small price tag.The premise behind Xotic is simple: You're an alien dude with an alien gun in an alien world that must stop an alien orb from destroying the alien planet. Not much going on here in terms of a story, but obviously it's not the main selling point. You’ll be using your bizarre weapon (or should I say creature) called a Macroterra that morphs, mutates and transforms into various different gun. This crazy thing is your pistol, your shotgun, your sniper rifle and many other weapons all rolled into one. Each level revolves around defeating several enemies including a "champion" enemy (which is really just regular enemies as a selected targeted) and finishing off the level while collecting power ups and score boosters as you go.These elements alone would make for an average game, and if you're only looking to do one initial playthrough, you'll only be getting a few hours out of this, as enemies are pretty dumb and only exist in the game as kill fodder. The fun comes combining all these elements: killing enemies, grabbing power ups and shooting infected planets, all into one huge chain. With that in mind, Xotic is a game that demands to be replayed over and over, re-doing missions to improve your skills and your score, and then checking out the leaderboards to match up your puny score against the world. Getting high scores and perfect chains are tough, but just replaying the stages over and over just to see if I could get a perfect chain going gives the sensation of knocking over a bunch of dominoes… and it feels strangely satisfying.Xotic uses those familiar FPS controls you’re all used to, and for the most part, the feel of the controls are decent. However, some collision detection problems were apparent that made my character get hung up on a few rocks, totally screwing up my runs. Running, jumping and platforming would have been decent if jumping didn’t feel so floaty, which makes halograms riding a bit annoying when you're trying to get off the ground as fast as possible.Another issue with the controls is in regards to how fast you can switch weapons. Since the whole point of the gameplay is to dispatch enemies and shoot targets as fast as possible to maintain a high score, then why does it take a second or so to switch between weapon types? That mere second could be the factor that makes or breaks a good high score, and this small issue really effects the game’s pacing.Overall, the controls work, but they could be better. From a visual standpoint, Xotic has a nice and creepy look to it, with an overall design which is sure to please any fan of sci-fi. From a graphical standpoint, Xotic seems very dated, as textures look rather damp and blurry. Visual effects are constantly flying, making your PC screen look like it's about to barf up a rainbow (whether that's a good or bad thing is up to you.) Sound effects are average at best, and while the music here isn’t too bad, it doesn’t do such a great job in setting the mood.Xotic sure is a strange game... A strange game that certainly doesn't push the FPS genre forward, but manages to provide decent fun for anyone that wants a little arcade action every now and then.Gameplay – 4Controls – 2Graphics – 3

Street Fighter X Tekken video onslaught

Didn't make it to the San Diego Comic Con last week? That's okay, because Capcom has uploaded so much video from its Street Fighter X Tekken demo on show there that you could be here all day.Below is just one video. It's half-an-hour long gameplay taken directly from the action on the SDCC booth, and there are plenty more where that came from. Still, if you're one of those crazy Street Fighter types that sees the frames and timings in the moves of these games at Matrix-reading levels of complexity, you might get something out of watching these button-bashers play.

LA Noire dev goes into administration

LA Noire developer Team Bondi has gone into administration, according to a report by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission, which says the former Rockstar-backed studio received a notification of discharge on August 26. Rumours surrounding the studio's imminent financial collapse first emerged early last month following widespread reports that the developer had had a major falling out with LA Noire publisher Rockstar and the pair had no future plans to work together. Reports also suggested Rockstar and not Team Bondi owns the LA Noire IP. It was recently claimed that the LA Noire dev was being acquired by KMM Studios, the Australian developer working on Happy Feet 2. This morning that doesn't appear to be the case.Team Bondi's status with ASIC has been changed to 'Under External Administration and/or Controlled Receivership', although it's noted it can take up to 28 days for a company filing for administration to become public. There's no word yet on the fate of Team Bondi's sister company Depth Analysis, which was responsible for the impressive Motionscan tech seen in Rockstar's crime thriller. We're absolutely baffled by this. What happened to all that LA Noire money? We'll bring you more as we get it... Andy Robinson

Sony's slick 3D headset is actually comin

Remember that slick 3D headset Sony showed off at the beginning of the year? Well it looks like you're actually going to be able to buy one. The PlayStation firm has officially slapped a November 11 Japan release date on the futuristic-looking visor, called 'HMZ- T1', and it's set to keep the same specs seen earlier in the year. While the exterior design has changed slightly (it's not so slick now), the headset still boasts a pair of 1280x720 0.7-inch OLED panels mounted in front of each eye (apparently offering an experience similar to viewing a 750-inch screen from 20m away), as well as 5.1 surround sound from integrated headphones. The HMZ-T1 includes HDMI input and output (so you can take off the headset and continue on a TV) and is set to retail for 60,000 yen (£481).Sony's exec deputy president Hiroshi Yoshioka said of the device in January, "As a big gamer myself, I couldn't be excited more than when I first played Gran Turismo 5 with this head-mounted display because nobody, not even my wife, could interrupt me so that I could get a higher score." 51 games pulled from sale in Norway follo

Multiple Norwegian retailers have temporarily removed over 50 games from sale following the recent attacks that killed 77 people in a government building and youth camp. According to domestic reports (via Gamasutra), Coop Norway and Platekompaniet voluntarily made the decision to suspend sales of a number of violent games including first person shooter Homefront, Sniper Ghost Warrior, Counter-Strike Source and the Call of Duty series, as well as MMO World of Warcraft.Alleged attacker Anders Behring Breivik mentioned World of Warcraft and of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 in a 1,500-page manifesto written before the attacks. He reportedly said he used the former as cover for being out of contact with friends and family, while he viewed the latter as a potentially effective training tool. Tom Ivan
