Geithner reiterated that the US welcomes Chinese investment in the US and stressed that it'll be all good for both China and the US

"That's (the Chinese investments in the United States) driven by the desire of Chinese companies to have more access to US technology and to try to expand their opportunities in this market. And, again, we welcome that,"said Geithner.

The low temperature of the major cold

Like the periods of minor cold, periods of major cold are also solar terms which can express the degree of cold. In ancient times, the major cold period could be divided into three parts callerift goldd “three hou”, according to different temperatures. During the third part, which is the last five days of the major cold period, the weather can reach the lowest temperatures, and the ice on frozen waterways will be thick and hard.

For some crops, the appropriate low temperature is needed at a certain period of growth. For example, crops such as wheat and cole need to grow at low temperatures at the vernalization stage; otherwise they cannot grow as usual. In most of the southern parts of China, the weather is warm throughout thetera gold year. The ability of wheat and cole that is planted earlier to resist cold can be weakened if they grow too fast. This kind of crop can easily suffer damage from low temperatures and frost. Choosing the right crop for the right land, planting at the appropriate time, and adopting effective measures to promote and control growth, are extremely important to achieve high production levels.

The James Brown Show Live at the Apollo (1963) is one of the great popular music albums of all time. Brown pioneered funk music and crossed over to white audiences with the hit “Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag” (1965). ASL (American Sign Language)

Langrift golduage primarily used by deaf Americans, based on hand shape, location, movement and expression augmented by finger spelling. Adapted from French models in the nineteenth century (and completely distinct from British signing), sign language was also repressed by institutions which denigrated it as broken communication and sought to force the deaf to read lips and vocalize. Since the 1980s, it has been increasingly recognized as a complex language, the structure and expressiveness of which differs from Englitera goldsh. It has become a sign of community for the deaf; hearing speakers study it as a recognized foreign language in universities and community programs. Estimates of signers in the US vary widely from several hundred thousand to 2 million.

Assistant District Attorney John McConnell told the Manhattan Criminal Court the defendant faces multiple charges, including criminal sexual assault and attempted rape. McConnell asked Judge Melissa Jackson to deny bail, saying Strauss-Kahn has the personal, political and financial resources to pay millions of dollars in bail and not return.

McConnell said Strauss-Kahn has no ties to the United States or New York, noting also the absence of an extradition agreement with France that would help ensure his appearance for trial.

Study Finds Increased Stress and Depression for College First-Years

When it comes to the dealing with the stress of rigorous academics, the high cost of education and the pressure to succeed in today's highly competitive job market, college students just aren't coping.

A new study from UCLA's Higher Education Research Institute reports that the emotional health of first-year college students has hit an all-time low.Rift Gold In a survey of more than 200,000 freshmen at 279 colleges and universities only 52 percent of students rated their emotional health as high or above average. That number is down 3.4 percent from 2009, and dropped a whopping 12 percent from 1985, when 64 percent of students gave themselves high marks for mental health.

Fewer female students reported high levels of mental health than men (46 percent compared to 59 percent). Study author Sylvia Hurtado said in a USA Today article that she believes this is due to the fact that men have better coping skills when it comes to dealing with stress.

Dr. Aaron Ellington, a psychiatrist who works with children and adolescents at University Hospitals Case Medical Center,RIFT Platinum says he is not so sure that college men are actually better at handling mental health issues. "Women more easily admit to mental health issues," he told AOL Health. "I would question the assumption that men are better at 'working off' stress. Men and women have different issues, but women are more likely to admit that there are issues in the first place," he said.

Concerns that college students' emotional problems will negatively influence time management skills and good decision-making when it comes to drugs and alcohol have administrators worried.rift gold Ellington agrees that this is very possible. "Most colleges and universities have counseling centers, but how well they advertise the services is questionable," says Ellington. "If no one knows about it, what good does it do? At some schools you only hear about special services at orientation. Schools need to let incoming freshmen know that counseling is free and easily accessible. It should be as prominent as posters for joining a fraternity or sorority."

Ellington says that further studies need to be done in order to determine whether the increase in emotional dissatisfaction is actually significant. He points to the fact that the education system has changed significantly over the past 25 years -- and not necessarily in a positive way.RIFT Platinum "Fewer dollars for education can increase stress on students," he said. He also points out that social pressures -- in the form of bullying -- have become more public with the use of social networking sites like Facebook.

"The types of problems young people are talking about in my practice are the same," he says, "though the avenues have changed with the times."

"For as long as we can remember, students have dealt with bullying, they've gotten involved with drugs. The drugs may change, TERA Goldbut the behaviors haven't. In the 1950's and 1960's people didn't believe we had these problems, but the truth is we just didn't have a name for them. It doesn't mean that these problems didn't exist."

FDA Approves New Antidepressant Said to Carry Fewer Side Effects

Doctors claim a new antidepressant, scheduled to hit the market this spring, may cause fewer side effects than its predecessors, Prozac and Zoloft. Viibryd, more commonly know as Vilazodone, is the first new option to treat depression in ten years and has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults.

Doctors say that while there are treatment options available for depression, side effects,Rift Gold which include weight gain and sexual dysfunction, can often outweigh the benefits of these medicines. FDA spokesperson Sandy Walsh told AOL Health, however, that this new drug isn't superior to any other antidepressant already on the market.

"Medications affect everyone differently, so it is important to have a variety of treatment options available to patients who suffer from depression,"RIFT Platinum Walsh says. "This drug offers an additional choice."

Two randomized, double-blind trials showed 40 mg of Vilazodone given once daily to adults suffering from MDD proved the drug is significantly more effective than the placebo in improving depressive symptoms. Like other drugs, Vilazodone works to control the brain chemical serotonin, but can also boost dopamine levels.

"Vilazodone met the FDA's standards for approval,"rift gold Walsh said. "It proved to be safe and effective to treat major depressive disorder."

During safety studies, researchers monitored 2,177 patients diagnosed with MDD. Their side effects included diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and insomnia. A little more than 7 percent of patients who received vilazodone discontinued treatment due to adverse reactions.

Reportedly, patients made only minimal complaints of sexual dysfunction including decreased libido, abnormal orgasms, delayed ejaculation and erectile dysfunction. According to Walsh,RIFT Platinum however, there are still a few loose ends.

"The FDA does not agree with the claim about sexual side effects," explains Walsh. "There is not sufficient data for that claim. The drug company did use some sexual function assessments in some of its trials, and the results were mixed."

No reports of drug-related abnormalities in hepatic or cardiac parameters or vital signs occurred. There were also no associations involving change of body weight over eight weeks, says manufacturer PGxHealth/Clinical Data.

This drug will be sold in 10, 20 and 40 mg tablets and will contain a label, just like other antidepressants, TERA Goldwarning users about increased risk of suicide and suicidal behavior in children, adolescents and young adults. The warning label also says depression and other serious psychiatric disorders are the most important causes of suicide, and close monitoring of patients starting these medications is necessary, says Walsh.

"As with any drug, the FDA will continuously monitor adverse events reported for any unknown safety signals," Walsh adds.

UFC 129: Rory MacDonald Hands Nate Diaz His Second Straight Loss

In a very impressive showing for a young fighter, Rift Gold Rory MacDonald earned the biggest victory of his mixed martial arts career, dominating Nate Diaz at UFC 129.

The fight was a blowout; the judges scored it 30-26, 30-27 and 30-26 in favor of MacDonald. At age 21, MacDonald looks tremendous. rift gold He really poured it on in the third round and slammed Diaz hard to the ground three times, using wrestling-style belly-to-back suplexes to send Diaz crashing to the canvas.

The loss was the second in a row for Diaz, who simply doesn't look strong enough to deal with good opponents at 170 pounds. RIFT Platinum Diaz needs to move back down to lightweight or else he's going to keep getting overpowered, as he did against both MacDonald and Dong Hyun Kim in his last fight.

The victory improved the 21-year-old MacDonald to 11-1 in his MMA career. TERA Gold He has a great future ahead of him.

How to Defrost Ribs

Overview
Ribs stored in a freezer set at 0 degrees F will maintain taste and quality for four to six months. When it is time to thaw the ribs, RIFT Platinum it is important to do it in a way that will ensure it is safe to consume and maintain the quality of the meat. TERA Gold The key to thawing ribs and other cuts of meat safely is to keep the temperature below 40 degrees F to prevent the growth of bacteria.

Step 1
Keep ribs in the original package. This will keep the meat from drying out.

Step 2
Place the package of ribs on a plate or dish. The packaging may leak as it thaws, rift gold and the dish will prevent these drips from soiling other foods。

Step 3
Plan ahead. It may take 24 hours or more for the ribs to thaw in the refrigerator.

Step 4
Use meat within five days of thawing. Rift Gold Ribs, either pork or beef, that go directly from the freezer to the refrigerator, will maintain quality and safety for an additional five days in the refrigerator.

Tips and Warnings
You can also thaw ribs in cold water or the microwave, but both can adversely effect the quality of the meat. Ribs that have been thawed in the refrigerator can be refrozen safely. Meat thawed in the microwave or in cold water should be cooked before being refrozen.

Atlantis

Atlantis is the name of a mythical island or continent, believed to have been sunk beneath the ocean by an earthquake. An account of Atlantis was written by Greek philosopher Plato in about 350 B.C. in his dialogues Timaeus and the Critias. The name Atlantis is derived from “Island of Atlas,” Atlas being the Titan condemned to hold the sky on his shoulders after defeat by the Olympian gods. Athenian statesman Solon, an ancestor of Plato, rift gold reportedly heard the story from an Egyptian priest and named the land.
Plato may have also drawn on Greek folktales.

According to Plato, Atlantis existed in the 10th millennium B.C. He described it as a large island in the Western Ocean, a body of water beyond the known world, west of the Pillars of Hercules. With powerful kings, the Atlanteans supposedly extended their domain deep into Europe and Africa and amassed great wealth. They succumbed to greed, however, and attempted to enlarge their empire to the east. When their armies reached Athens, they met with defeat. The Athenians then liberated Atlantis. In a night of divine judgment, however, storms and earthquakes caused Atlantis to be swallowed up by the sea. The occupying Athenians were also drowned, leaving only a remnant from which Greek civilization was to be rebuilt.

Atlantis is sometimes associated with the island of Crete to the southeast of the Greek mainland in the MEDITERRANEAN SEA and the Minoans. Minoan civilization had been the center of culture and military power from about 3000 to 1000 B.C.,rift gold before the ascension of the Greeks, and an earthquake or earthquakes may have contributed to its decline. Plato may have heard stories of this earlier civilization, and used an account of it to demonstrate the superiority of a republican form of government over a monarchy.

Truth in Legends

Truth often blends with myth, as in the case of the supposed voyages of sixth-century Irish monk SAINT BRENDAN and an island known as ST. BRENDAN’S ISLE. Historical evidence indicates that, in the course of his sea pilgrimages, Brendan visited Wales on the British Isles, Brittany, in what is now northwestern France, and the Hebrides Islands west of Scotland. But, in some medieval literature, he is also purported to have visited an island somewhere in the Atlantic, hypothesized as Iceland, GREENLAND, the CANARY ISLANDS, the AZORES, the Madeira Islands, rift gold or the Bahama Islands. If Saint Brendan did in fact reach the Bahamas, he would have been the European discoverer of the Americas, even before the Vikings, a theory that, without any archaeological evidence, has to remain as myth as do theorized transatlantic voyages—by DRIFT VOYAGE—of other seagoing peoples of the Mediterranean region.

The writings describing Viking journeys at the turn of 11th century—the Saga of Eric the Red and the Saga of the Greenlanders—regarding the travels of ERIC THE RED, LEIF ERICSSON, and other Norsemen, were long considered largely myth until archaeological evidence in Newfoundland indicated a Viking presence in North America. Both Irish and Viking accounts, mythical or not, reportedly influenced later explorers to look for lands across the Atlantic. A map, supposedly from the mid-15th century and found in 1957—the so-called VINLAND MAP—which cartographically confirmed the Norse voyages to North America, turned out to be a forgery—in effect a legendary map—but, because of the archaeological evidence, did not do anything to published in 1882.

KUPE, a 10th-century Polynesian, as legend has it, pursued the Squid King in the South Pacific Ocean, leading to the discovery of NEW ZEALAND. It is known that the Polynesians did in fact migrate to New Zealand and became ancestral to the Maori, another case of truth blending with myth. Venetian merchant MARCO POLO, who traveled extensively in the Far East in the late 13th century, described CIPANGU as an island containing palaces with roofs of gold and streets paved in marble, one of more than 7,000 islands in an archipelago in the Sea of China, off the Pacific coast of Asia. Two centuries later, both CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS, an Italian sailing for Spain, and JOHN CABOT,rift gold an Italian sailing for England, sought this fabled island, thought to be a major source of spices, which has come to be associated most with Japan.

Another example of a legend with some truth is that of the Strait of Anian (see ANIAN, STRAIT OF), a mythical version of a NORTHWEST PASSAGE through North America from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. Such a strait supposedly extended from the Atlantic coast somewhere north of Labrador to a more southerly latitude on the Pacific coast. Although a concept of the 15th century until late 18th century, its name was gleaned from the writings of Marco Polo, one of the texts that explorers studied in the hope of

finding a practical water route from Europe to Asia. No such waterway fitting that description was located, although, in 1903–06, Norwegian ROALD ENGELBREGT GRAVNING AMUNDSEN did navigate a water route in the Arctic Ocean north of North America. Unlike the legendary Strait of Anian, supposedly a year-round route, the real Northwest Passage proved impractical because of annual freezing.

Legends out of History

Theories surrounding the LOST COLONY—part of the story of the first attempt at an English colony as sponsored by SIR WALTER RALEIGH in the late 16th century—demonstrate how legends evolve out of historical fact. The story of the colonists and how they struggled to survive along the coast of what is now northeastern North Carolina is known up to the point that their leader JOHN WHITE departed for England in 1587. When he returned to the region three years later, there was no trace of the colonists—who included his daughter, Eleanor White Dare, and his granddaughter, Virginia Dare—other than the word “CROATOAN” written on a stockade post. Since no evidence has been found to prove or disprove speculation regarding what happened to them, various myths endure, such as that they became ancestral to certain area tribes, some of whom have non-Indian blood. Reports of blue-eyed or bearded Native Americans passed down over the years often were associated with the Lost Colonists. Much folklore and literature surrounds Virginia Dare, the first English child born in the America, one of the most fantastic fables of which is that she was transformed into a white doe.

Small Regular Script, Zhong Shaojing, Lin Fei Jin, Buddhist Sutra, 43 line ink version

Zhong Shaojing (鍾紹京), courtesy name Keda (可大), was an official of the Chinese dynasty Tang Dynasty and Wu Zetian's Zhou Dynasty, briefly serving as a chancellor during the reign of Emperor Ruizong. Zhong's calligraphy was so frequently requested that almost all horizontal boards and signs of famous palaces and buildings were inscribed by him during the time of Empress Wu Ze Tian.

History Background

It is not known when Zhong Shaojing was born, but it is known that he was from Qian Prefecture (虔州, roughly modern Ganzhou, Jiangxi). His clan traced its ancestry to a number of officials of Han Dynasty, Cao Wei, Jin Dynasty (265-420), Northern Wei, Southern Qi, Liang Dynasty, Sui Dynasty, and Tang Dynasty. Both Zhong Shaojing's great-grandfather Zhong Baoshen (鍾寶慎) and grandfather Zhong Ziwei (鍾子威), however, were only minor local officials, and Zhong Shaojing's father Zhong Fazun (鍾法遵) did not carry any official titles.[1] In Zhong Shaojing's youth, during the reign of Wu Zetian, he served as a Sinong Lushi (司農錄事), a low-level official at the ministry of agriculture, but as he was well-known for his calligraphy, was requested by the legislative bureau of government (鳳閣, Fengge) to serve there. Many plaques of important public works projects built rift gold during Wu Zetian's reign, including the imperial meeting hall (明堂, Mingtang) and the palaces, and the odes to the nine dings that Wu Zetian built, were physically written by Zhong.

Participation in coup of 710

As of the Jinglong era (707-710) of Wu Zetian's son Emperor Zhongzong, Zhong Shaojing was serving as the director of imperial gardens (苑總監, Yuan Zongjian). In 710, Emperor Zhongzong died suddenly -- a death that traditional historians believed to be a poisoning carried out by his powerful wife Empress Wei and her daughter Li Guo'er the Princess Anle, so that Empress Wei could become "emperor" like Wu Zetian and Li Guo'er could become crown princess. For the time being, Emperor Zhongzong's son by a concubine, Li Chongmao the Prince of Wen, was made emperor (as Emperor Shang), and Empress Wei retained power as empress dowager and regent. She viewed Emperor Zhongzong's brother Li Dan the Prince of Xiang and sister Princess Taiping as threats, and considered killing them. Meanwhile, Princess Taiping and Li Dan's son Li Longji the Prince of Linzi heard news of this, and therefore considered acting first. They, along with Princess Taiping's son Xue Chongjian (薛崇簡), Zhong, Wang Chongye (王崇曄), Liu Youqiu, and Ma Sizong (麻嗣宗), planned a coup, and soon launched it, with support from imperial guard soldiers disgruntled at harsh treatment by their commanders Wei Bo (韋播) and Gao Song (高嵩), Empress Wei's nephews whom she had put in charge. Zhong was set to join the coup with the servants and laborers of the imperial gardens, but almost did not do so as he suddenly hesitated, only resolving to join the coup after his wife pointed out that if the coup failed, he would suffer death anyway. The coup was successful, and Empress Wei and Li Guo'er were killed. Li Dan was made regent, and for his contributions in the coup, Zhong was made Zhongshu Shilang (中書侍郎), the deputy head of the legislative bureau (中書省, Zhongshu Sheng), and given the designation Canzhi Jiwu (參知機務), making him a chancellor de facto. He was also given the honorific title Yinqing Guanglu Daifu (銀青光祿大夫). The next day, he was given the greater chancellor de facto designation of Tong Zhongshu Menxia Sanpin (同中書門下三品).

During Emperor Ruizong's reign

Several days after the coup, Li Dan, at the urging of Princess Taiping, Li Longji, and Li Longji's brother Li Chengqi the Prince of Song, retook the throne (as Emperor Ruizong), displacing Emperor Shang. Once Emperor Ruizong took the throne, Zhong received further promotions and honors -- he was made Zhongshu Ling (中書令) -- the head of the legislative bureau and a post considered one for a chancellor -- and created the Duke of Yue. He was also was given awards of silk, servants, a mansion, land, horses, and other assorted treasures. It was said that, however, that other officials disrespected Zhong for his past as a low-level official and despised him for carrying out actions based on his own wishes and desires. The official Xue Ji suggested to him that he demonstrate modesty by offering to resign -- something often done when high level officials are commissioned and mostly done ceremonially -- and when Zhong did, Xue entered the palace and persuaded Emperor Ruizong to accept the resignation. Emperor Ruizong did, and he made Zhong the minister of census (戶部尚書, Hubu Shangshu), and later the prefect of Shu Prefecture (蜀州, in modern Chengdu, Sichuan).

During Emperor Xuanzong's reign

In 712, Emperor Ruizong passed the throne to Li Longji, who took the throne as Emperor Xuanzong. Sometime after, Zhong Shaojing was recalled to again serve as minister of census, and later the head of the crown prince's household (太子詹事, Taizi Zhanshi). (As there was no crown prince at that time, the title was entirely honorary.) However, the chancellor Yao Chong disliked Zhong, and he accused Zhong and Liu Youqiu of complaining that they were not given important positions despite their contributions. Despite their denials, they were still demoted -- in Zhong's case, to be the prefect of Guo Prefecture (果州, roughly modern Nanchong, Sichuan). At a later point, he was further accused of offenses and demoted to be the sheriff of Huai'en County (懷恩, in modern Zhangzhou, Fujian), and his titles were stripped. He subsequently served as the secretary general of Wen Prefecture (溫州, roughly modern Wenzhou, Zhejiang).

In 727, Zhong visited the capital Chang'an, and had the opportunity to meet Emperor Xuanzong. He wept and stated:Does Your Imperial Majesty not remember what had happened in the past? Why do you abandon me to the wilderness, rift gold forever away from the palace? Further, those who had accomplishments at the time are now all deceased except this old subject of yours. Do you not have kindness for me?

Emperor Xuanzong was saddened, and immediately made Zhong Yinqing Guanglu Daifu and Taizi You Yude (太子右諭德), a member of the staff of the crown prince Li Hong. Some time thereafter, he was made Taizi Shao Zhanshi (太子少詹事), the deputy head of the crown prince's household. He died in his 80s while still serving in that position, although the year is not known. It was said that Zhong, in addition to being a famed calligrapher, also favored collecting calligraphy. Among his collections were several hundred works of Wang Xizhi, Wang Xianzhi, and Chu Suiliang. Three of his sons, Zhong Jiabi (鍾嘉璧), Zhong Jia'e (鍾嘉諤), and Zhong Jiawei (鍾嘉偉) served as officials.

National Security ... and The NFL

It's an interesting juxtaposition of events, but one which causes me concern about the direction of the country. We woke up this morning to hear and read of the brilliant and selfless accomplishment of our military in neutralizing Osama bin Laden, Rift Goldwhich will unquestionably enhance our safety. We should all react with pride and thanks for this achievement by those who so bravely and capably defend our freedoms and way of life.

However, at the same time, it is impossible not to be bothered by the selfishness being displayed by the National Football League players and owners in connection with the involvement of our Court of Appeals in St. Louis in the resolution of their differences.RIFT Platinum Why is this relevant on a national level?

At the same time as this dispute is moving from the District Court in Minneapolis, with both parties arguing about temporary and permanent stays of the District Court's ruling in favor of the players, this appellate court is being asked to consider on an urgent basis whether the Army Corp of Engineers may blow up a Mississippi River levee protecting hundreds of square miles of Illinois and Missouri, causing them to flood, in order to relieve flood pressure on other lands downriver.

Surely, no one can deny the urgency of the flood matter. As the river rises, it becomes essential to make a decision about what to do in the interest of the general welfare. Not being an engineer, I am in no position to assess the merits and determine if blowing up the levee is actually likely to avoid more harm than it causes.rift gold However, it is clear that doing so will cause irreparable harm to those who have their lands and homes flooded, and that they should be able to obtain an expedited review of their concerns.

Despite the shrill claims of the football crowd as to why staying or not staying the lower court's ruling will do them irreparable harm, and demands for expedited consideration, it is impossible to read these claims with a straight face in light of the unfolding drama around the levees. Even as an NFL season ticket-holder, it makes my blood boil to hear parties of this nature so callously claim that there will be irreparable harm to them if they can't begin preparation for the upcoming season or force changes in their financial arrangements at the same time and in the same court that so many are fighting for their land and livelihoods.

Why will the football folks not take the high road and step aside so that the appellate court is able to provide every consideration to those who are so desperately seeking its intervention? RIFT PlatinumWhy do we have to hear demands for expedited review of an ultimately petty dispute between billionaires and millionaires at the same time and in the same forum that is considering such fundamental claims? How much goodwill would have been engendered if one or both sides in the football dispute had voluntarily stood aside and allowed the flood matter to take precedence?

For all the good which is represented by our brave and capable military forces, there appears to be no limit to the greed and selfishness of so many in positions of power and adulation in our society. Just as we saw in connection with the financial crash of 2008,TERA Gold which plunged us into the Great Recession, when important elements of society feel that they are beyond reproach and that their needs are paramount, dire consequences ensue.

Hopefully, those of you who are reading this will make your voices heard to those who have lost sight of what matters ... and what doesn't!

You Know It's Good When the Boys Want in

Don't get me wrong, I love men. I even married one. And I love the boys in my life -- my four stepsons, my adorable nephews and godsons, and all those great guy friends who help make my life fun and funny.

But I do have to admit that I experienced a difficult moment in 2003, when after 10 years of success,Rift Gold the brainchild of the Ms. Foundation, Take Our Daughters to Work Day, was pressured into becoming Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day. I was shocked. There was a vital reason this program was created specifically for girls. It was in response to a very disturbing Harvard study by Dr. Carol Gilligan -- and research conducted at the University of Minnesota -- showing that as girls approached adolescence, at around 11 years of age, they stopped raising their hands in class; they began losing their self-esteem, their confidence, and their interest in math, science and technology. As a result, the report said, as the girls' academic curiosity plummeted, so did their chance of being equipped for meaningful future employment.

After all the hard-won battles fought for women, how could we let this happen to girls?

Like a lot of women my age, it reminded me of the low expectations that were thrust on us when we were growing up.RIFT Platinum I'll never forget struggling with a math problem when I was in the 7th grade at Marymount, and complaining to the math nun about it.

"Don't worry, dear," she said to me. "You won't need it."

Talk about low expectations.

Poring over the research, the Ms. Foundation, under the tenacious leadership of Marie Wilson, began strategizing what to do about this report. Marie brought in consultant Nell Merlino, who told us about a top newsman who would take his young daughter with him to important events, and how proud and worthwhile she felt at being included. This story really clicked with us -- from it we envisioned a program that would encourage caring adults to mentor and safely escort adolescent girls through this perilous passage.rift gold It would be called Take Our Daughters to Work Day; and we pointedly used the words "Our Daughters" -- not "Your Daughters" -- so the day would embrace all of the girls in our lives, whether they were nieces or granddaughters or even neighbors.

Most important, mothers and fathers knew that something was going on with their daughters that wasn't quite right. And now this program would give them something to do about it. There's nothing like the truth to set a movement on fire. Those parents helped to bring their businesses and corporations on board. Then Gloria Steinem (who along with Letty Pogrebin,RIFT Platinum Pat Carbine and myself were the founders of the Ms. Foundation) told a reporter at Parade about the campaign, and the magazine ran a small piece about it. That's when the calls began flooding in.

I'll always remember that first Take Our Daughters to Work Day. Girls were everywhere! In firehouses, on ferry boats, at desks in magazine editorial offices, backstage at theaters. It was thrilling.

And the stories coming out of the day were indelible. Like the story about 10-year-old Shelby from Lubbock, Texas, who accompanied her dad to his job as a car salesman at a Cadillac dealership:

I remember him letting me 'help' move the cars around the showroom floor. But my most enduring memory was the moment I realized that the women who worked there only sat at their desks and typed, and didn't get to drive cars around inside the building. This experience foreshadowed my career, because it reminded me to always ask: "What about the women?"
As an awareness campaign, it was a resounding success. As a cultural movement, it was historic. TERA Gold I remember a letter someone wrote to the New York Times, heralding the day "not [as] an exercise in pretending that women don't need men; it is an acknowledgment that womanhood begins in girlhood." I loved that.

But almost immediately, we began hearing faint murmurs: "What about the boys?" It was a reasonable question for those who hadn't read the research, but even so, it troubled us. Of course we cared about boys. Our "Free to Be... You and Me" projects were all about encouraging the hopes and dreams of both girls and boys. But our argument was solid: Back then, boys always joined their dads at the office, or even accompanied them on golf outings with their business partners. The idea of bringing girls into the work world was something groundbreaking and lifesaving.

We stuck to our guns for a decade, but by 2003, the pressure had gotten too great. And so we expanded the program to bring boys into the fold. Leave it to Gloria to sum up our feelings at the time with her characteristic wit: "It was the first thing girls had that boys wanted. So you know it's good when the boys want in."

So the boys are in. But in many respects, the girls are still out. While women obtain the majority of college degrees, they represent only 15 percent of senior management in all industries. And what about the lack of confidence among girls in math and science reported in 1993? Today, only 22 percent of computer-science graduates are women. According to a 2008 National Science Foundation study, that percentage has been decreasing steadily.

So the question now is not about the boys. The question remains: How do we insure the future for girls? That's what makes this day important.

Eighteen years after its founding, I'm still proud of our revolutionary program, which just last year engaged 36 millions kids -- girls and boys. Most important, it has truly raised the consciousness of the business world that it must open its arms -- and its doors -- to girls in the workplace.

And, yes, I've come around to thinking that it's good that boys are getting used to sharing floor space with the girls. Because, if things go right, someday they'll be working for them.

-- Another W-1 MMA competitor, RIFT Platinum Wooley (7-1), made his name fighting for the now defunct TKO promotion in Canada.

- Romero (5-2) was an entrant in Bellator's season two featherweight tournament, TERA Gold losing in the quarterfinal to eventual runner-up Patricio "Pitbull" Freire.

Roundtable: Will the U.S. Lose Its AAA Rating?

On Monday, ratings agency Standard & Poor's announced that it was downgrading its outlook for the U.S.' sovereign credit rating from stable to negative,
Rift Gold and put the odds of a ratings downgrade within the next two years at 1 in 3. The news spooked stock investors.

What's the significance of this announcement? I asked two of my Foolish colleagues, Morgan Housel and Matt Koppenheffer, to weigh in on the following question:

Will the U.S. Lose Its AAA Rating?

Morgan Housel: It shouldn't, because it doesn't have to. Our debt problems are massive, but still very solvable. I also think most people underestimate this country's ability to pull it together and act when it becomes truly imperative. You see this during wars, RIFT Platinum terrorist attacks, financial crises, etc. Parties hold hands and get it done when things get really ugly. Congress won't act today because there's no crisis -- the Treasury can borrow debt at a lower interest rate today than it could when there was a budget surplus 10 years ago. When interest rates spike and a true crisis stares us in the face, I think you'll see quick action. Maybe that's being naive, but I imagine it's how this story will play out.

That said, downgrading America's debt isn't up to Congress or the president. rift gold It's up to the ratings agencies. Not only do the raters have an abysmal track record, but I worry about this on an egotistical level. The person responsible for downgrading the U.S. will overnight become the most famous analyst on the planet. Knowing the personality of people who go into high finance, I can't help but wonder if this will be a driving factor. That might sound conspiratorial, but it's what happens when two firms (Moody's and S&P) hold duopoly power over the nation's debt ratings. You get despots.

As for actual default, history shows the best indicator of future default is simply past default. The U.S. hasn't defaulted on its debt in modern history, so we're doing well there. We've shown the willingness to make tough decisions during past bouts of debt overload, particularly after World War II and in the early '90s. RIFT Platinum The bond market has a good memory of this stuff, as it should. As I wrote last week, the market will forever be kinder to Ford (F) than it will General Motors(GM) , only because the former made tough choices while the latter dug its own grave. There's a similar analogy in there when comparing the U.S. to countries like, say, Greece.

Matt Koppenheffer: Earlier this week I spoke pretty confidently that the 1-in-3 odds that Standard & Poor's put on the U.S. losing its AAA credit rating was silly. TERA Gold To be fair, I hold none of the cards in that game and S&P holds them all -- so if the folks there want to downgrade the U.S., then, by God, they will.

The bigger question though, may be if anyone really gives a rat's hindquarters whether S&P goes ahead with a downgrade. In the fallout from the financial crisis, S&P, Moody's (MCO) , and Fitch have bent over backward to be clear that their ratings are just opinions and they can get things very wrong (ya think?). While the stock market sold off in the wake of the outlook knock, the bond market charged right ahead, apparently flipping S&P the bird as investors continued gobbling up low-yielding Treasuries.

In the end I can't say whether the S&P will downgrade the U.S. I can say that I don't think it should -- there's an exceedingly low likelihood that the U.S. won't make good on its debts and there's no reason that it shouldn't be among the top tier of borrowers. What that doesn't mean, however, is that Treasuries are good investments. With yields at ridiculous lows and specter of inflation far from nonexistent, I think Bill Gross has the right idea.

Alex Dumortier: Although the stock market reacted sharply to the news, the bond market took it in stride. By the end of the day, the yield on the 30-year Treasury bond had increased all of 3 basis points to 3.39% (1 basis point = 1 hundredth of a percentage point.) Frankly, I'm surprised equity investors were selling stocks on the announcement, which was long overdue. It's not exactly a surprise that the U.S. can't afford to stay on its current fiscal trajectory. As long as the government does not address the issue in a coherent, forceful manner, the outlook for the U.S.' credit rating can't be anything other than negative.

Will the U.S. lose its AAA rating? I think the odds of that happening are pretty slim (but not zero), and certainly less than S&P's estimate. The budget deficit and national debt are now center stage as political issues, and I don't see that changing anytime soon. These problems are far from intractable, but the solutions are unpopular (something politicians abhor). Nevertheless, S&P's decision heaps a little extra pressure on the politicos to act with purpose rather than simply trying to score political points.

Study: Hold Off on Treating Kids' Fevers With Drugs

When your child has a fever, it's natural to panic. And panicking parents often try to treat the problem with drugs.

Not so fast, says a new study published in the journal Pediatrics. Reaching for the fever meds is actually the last thing a mom or dad should do -- unless their little girl or boy is really suffering.

"There's a myth out there that if you have a fever, you could have brain damage or seizures. That causes parents to be very anxious,"Rift Gold research co-author Janice Sullivan told Time.com. "Sometimes children with a fever of 103 will sit and play and act completely normal."

Sullivan, a professor of pediatric critical care and clinical pharmacology at the University of Louisville, says fever generally doesn't hurt children. It can actually help them because it sends a message to the body to produce more white blood cells, which ward off infection.

What that means is that a fever might actually cut the length of time a child is sick by stopping bacterial infections and viruses from multiplying, according to Sullivan.

The message?RIFT Platinum Don't load your kids up on Tylenol, Advil or other fever-reducing medicine just because their body temperature is up a bit. Doctors wouldn't, unless the fever is 101 degrees or higher, the research shows.

Sullivan and her team found that parents are quick to treat kids' rift goldfevers with medicine, with a quarter of them saying they use it for fevers of under 100 degrees and 85 percent reporting they'd roused their children from sleep to give them medicine to bring their temperatures down.

The researchers said exceptions should be made for babies under 3 months old who have a fever that's higher than 100.4 degrees and those 3 to 6 months old with a temperature over 101 degrees. They said immediate medical care is necessary in those cases.

But for the little ones older than 6 months, fevers shouldn't send off alarm bells unless they're higher than 103 degrees,RIFT Platinum the study said. If they're accompanied by other serious symptoms like diarrhea and vomiting, a trip to the pediatrician may be in order.

The report warns that though it may be more effective to alternate between acetaminophen and ibuprofen, the safety concerns over mixing the two probably outweigh the possible benefits.

There is "evidence that combining these two products is more effective than the use of a single agent alone; however, there are concerns that combined treatment may be more complicated and contribute to the unsafe use of these drugs," the authors wrote.

Moms and dads who do decide to treat the temp with fever-busting medicine should give the correct dose, TERA Goldwhich is by the child's weight, not age, Sullivan said. Her analysis found that half of parents give the wrong amount of medicine to their kids.

Study: High Doses of Vitamin D May Prevent Cancer

Researchers now say higher levels of vitamin D may be necessary to reduce one's risk of cancer. Scientists at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine and Creighton University School of Medicine in Omaha just published a new study in the journal Anticancer Research,Rift Gold noting that traditional intakes of the essential vitamin just aren't enough to reach blood levels that can prevent or significantly decrease the risk of breast cancer and several other major diseases.

"We found that daily intakes of vitamin D by adults in the range of 4,000 to 8,000 IU [international units] are needed to maintain blood levels of vitamin D metabolites in the range needed to reduce by about half the risk of several diseases -- breast cancer, colon cancer, multiple sclerosis and type 1 diabetes," said Dr. Cedric Garland,RIFT Platinum professor of family and preventive medicine at the UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center, in a press release. "I was surprised to find that the intakes required to maintain vitamin D status for disease prevention were so high -- much higher than the minimal intake of vitamin D of 400 IU per day that was needed to defeat rickets in the 20th century."

During the study, researchers surveyed several thousand volunteers who were taking vitamin D supplements with a dosage ranging from 1,000 to 10,000 IU per day. They found those taking the highest amounts of vitamin D were less likely to contract major diseases such as cancer.

Despite these findings, rift goldsome doctors say just boosting your vitamin D levels aren't enough for disease prevention and in some cases may be dangerous.

Dr. James Spencer, a dermatologist and American Academy of Dermatology board member, says the levels of vitamin D suggested in the study are way too high and that reducing the risk of cancer is not as easy as eating more oranges or taking more vitamin supplements. "Generally, when things are too good to be true, they usually are," Spencer told AOL Health.

Dr. Sophie Balk, attending pediatrician at the Children's Hospital at Montefiore in New York City agrees. "We know that vitamin D is good for muscle health and osteoporosis -- the research shows that," Balk explained to AOL Health. RIFT Platinum"But the research isn't conclusive about its effects on cancers. We really need more research about these other possible effects because we really can't say for sure."

Both doctors agree the dosage of 4,000 to 8,000 IU could be dangerous. "If you take that amount, over time it could be toxic," warns Balk.

"Very high levels of vitamin D, usually above 10,000 [IUs] per day, are known to cause kidney and tissue damage," adds Spencer.

To get sufficient amounts, but not too much vitamin D, Spencer recommends including salmon, milk, oranges or orange juice, egg yolk and mushrooms in your diet.

Although the sun and its UV rays are the best source of vitamin D,TERA Gold Spencer says there are other harmful results that can stem from too much sunshine, like skin cancer, and doesn't recommend people seek vitamin D through sunbathing.

Balk recommends 400 IU per day of vitamin D for children and adolescents, while Spencer says the recommended dosage for adults is 600 IU per day and 800 IU per day for adults over 70 years old.

Land of the Inca

Peru is a large South American country that lies just south of the equator. In the west it has a long coastline on the Pacific Ocean. Many of Peru’s major cities are located on a narrow strip of flat land along the coast. Among them is Lima, rift gold the capital. Eastern Peru is part of the huge basin of the Amazon River. It is nearly covered with rainforests. Between the coast and the Amazon region are the Andes. Some peaks in this mountain range reach higher than 20,000 feet. High in the Andes is Lake Titicaca, one of the largest lakes in South America.

Around AD 1200 a group of Indians called the Inca formed the city of Cuzco in what is now Peru. From there they set out to conquer other Indian peoples along South America’s west coast. Eventually the Inca ruled over as many as 12 million people. But their great empire was destroyed when Spanish soldiers seized the land in the 1530s. Spain ruled until Peru won its independence almost 300 years later.

Today Peru still has many reminders of the Inca. The country’s name comes from a word meaning “land of abundance” in Quechua, rift gold the Inca language. The name refers to the riches that the Inca got from the land, including great amounts of gold. Indians who still speak the Quechua language make up about half of Peru’s population. And in the Andes there is Machu Picchu. The remarkable stone remains of this Inca settlement attract visitors from all over the world.

Sugarcane and Politics

The country of Cuba is part of the West Indies, a group of islands in the Caribbean Sea. The country is made up of one main island and about 1,600 smaller islands. The capital is Havana, on the northwestern coast of the main island.
Many Cubans are farmers. For a long time the most valuable crop has been sugarcane. Sugarcane grows as a tall, thick grass, rift gold and it is from this plant that we get sugar. Cuba also produces tobacco, and Cuban cigars are famous worldwide. Other major crops are coffee, rice, and tropical fruits. Although making sugar from cane is still important, many factories have been closed. Tourism is now the largest source of income for Cuba.

Cubans speak Spanish, and the country’s culture reflects its Spanish background. The island was claimed for Spain by Christopher Columbus in 1492 and was ruled by Spain until the 1890s. African culture has also influenced Cuba. Many Africans were taken to the island long ago to work as slaves on the sugar plantations.

Cuba saw major changes when Fidel Castro took over the government in 1959. Castro was strongly communist, and he developed a close relationship with the government of the Soviet Union. This caused problems between Cuba and its neighbor the United States, rift gold since the United States strongly disagreed with the political ideas of the Soviet Union. In fact, Cuba was nearly the center of a nuclear war between the United States and the Soviet Union in 1962. The problems remained even after the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991.

Lebanon's Acting PM Accuses Iran of Interference

Lebanon's acting prime minister, Saad Hariri, has accused Iran of meddling in Lebanon's internal affairs and of trying to turn his country and some Gulf Arab states into an "Iranian protectorate."

Hariri said his country, rift gold along with Bahrain and several others, are suffering from blatant Iranian intervention. He made the accusations Thursday in a speech to a business delegation in Beirut.

In January, Lebanon's Iranian-backed Hezbollah and its allies resigned from the country's coalition government, causing its collapse.

Later, rift gold a majority of Lebanese lawmakers voted to support Najib Mikati - a candidate backed by the Shi'ite militant group - to replace Hariri as prime minister.

I'm not having it all cut off

Miles sometime went to the barber's during working hours to have his hair cut. But this was against the office rules: clerks had to have their hair cut in their own time. While Miles was at the barber's one day, the manager of the office came in by chance to have his own hair cut and sat just beside him.
"Hello, rift gold Miles," the manager said. "I see that you are having your hair cut in office time."
"Yes, sir, I am," admitted Miles calmly. "You see, sir, it grows in office time."
"Not all of it," said the manager at once. "Some of it grows in your own time."
"Yes, sir, rift gold that's quite true." Answered Miles politely, "but I'm not having it all cut off."

Kingdom of Southeast Asia

The people of the Kingdom of Thailand often describe their land as looking like an elephant’s head. The trunk is the south. The ear is the northeast. The top of the head is the mountainous north. The mouth is the delta and harbor of the Chao Phraya River, where you will also find Bangkok, rift gold the country’s capital and chief port. The plains of the river’s basin make up the elephant’s eyes.

Monsoons shape the weather in most of Thailand, bringing lots of rain from May to September. The heavy rain was good for the forests that once covered half of the country. But many of the forests have been cut down by loggers since 1970. Forestland has also been cleared to provide land for farming, especially for growing rice, the main food crop. The remaining forests in Thailand contain teak, bamboo, palms, and rattan. All of these are used to make things to sell.

The royal palace plays an important part in preserving traditional Thai culture. Many ceremonies are held at the palace. One of these is the yearly kathina (“cloth”) ceremony, rift gold in which people present gifts to Buddhist monks who have just returned from a period of seclusion. Thai cooking has become very popular in many countries outside Thailand. Seafood, meats, and vegetables are often flavored with coconut milk and peanuts in spicy and delicious curries, or stews, and served over rice or noodles. If there is a Thai restaurant in your area, you can enjoy a sample of Thailand’s famous cuisine.

Cain Velasquez May Face Lesnar-dos Santos Winner in Houston

TORONTO -- UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez is on track for an October return, TERA Gold and his comeback fight could come on Oct. 8 in Houston, UFC president Dana White said shortly after UFC 129.

Earlier this week, the promotion announced it would visit Houston in the fall with an event and a Fan Expo. On Saturday, White said the event could be targeted for Velasquez to defend his title.

"I don't know yet but probably," he said. "It sounds like that would make a lot of sense."

Velasquez has been on the shelf since defeating Brock Lesnar last October. RIFT Platinum He had shoulder surgery shortly thereafter and has been undergoing extensive physical therapy to get back into fighting shape Meanwhile, in June, Lesnar and Junior dos Santos will be fighting for the right to face Velasquez for the belt.

The October date is very tentative. rift gold It would require Velasquez to be cleared and ready to go, as well as the Lesnar-dos Santos winner to emerge from their UFC 131 fight relatively healthy, otherwise the date may have to be pushed back.

The 28-year-old Velasquez remains undefeated in his MMA career at 9-0 overall.

On Friday, RIFT Platinum Velasquez told fans at a question-and-answer session that he would eventually like the chance to fight the winner of the Strikeforce Grand Prix so MMA could have a true, undisputed champion.

"But right now,
Rift Gold my focus is on studying Brock Lesnar and Junior dos Santos," he said.

Fructose or Glucose?

Overview
There are many different sweeteners that you can add to your foods, and that appear as ingredients in prepared and processed foods. If you're interested in eating as healthy a diet as possible, you may be wondering whether glucose, fructose, both or neither are healthy components of food. The two sugars are closely chemically related, but have some different effects in the body.

Glucose Chemistry
Glucose is a naturally occurring sugar made up of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen.
Rift Gold It's chemically classified as a monosaccharide, meaning that it's made up of a single sugar unit. In nature, it's found either on its own, or chemically bonded to other molecules of glucose and other monosaccharides to form larger sugars and starches. Natural sources of glucose include fruit, table sugar, and any starchy food, including grains and vegetables such as beans and potatoes.

Fructose Chemistry
Like glucose, fructose is a monosaccharide made up of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen, explain Drs. Mary Campbell and Shawn Farrell in their book "Biochemistry." It's closely related to glucose, and like glucose, your cells can use fructose to provide energy. Natural sources of fructose include fruit and table sugar, RIFT Platinum which is extracted from certain plants including sugar cane and beets. There are no natural sources of fructose independent of and apart from glucose -- any time you eat fructose that occurs naturally in your food, you're also eating glucose.

Cellular Use and Health
Both fructose and glucose -- in appropriate amounts and in the proportions in which they occur in nature -- are healthy and good for you. Your cells use these monosaccharides to provide energy that fuels motion and other cellular processes, explain Drs. Reginald Garrett and Charles Grisham in their book "Biochemistry." rift gold If you overconsume glucose or fructose, you store the excess of either as body fat, which increases your risk of obesity. You're not likely to overconsume glucose or fructose if you eat whole, unsweetened foods, but if you add glucose, fructose or table sugar to your food, you increase your risk.

Other Issues
In addition to the risk of obesity, research suggests that when you consume fructose in proportions greater than those found in nature -- or in particularly large amounts -- you can increase your risk of heart disease and other disease processes. RIFT Platinum A 2000 article published in the "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition" found that consumption of large quantities of fructose increased subjects' triglyceride levels, which increases risk of heart disease. TERA Gold The authors suggested glucose as a more appropriate substitute. Further, a 2004 article in the same journal noted that fructose consumption was strongly associated with increased risk of obesity. For this reason, you may wish to avoid adding sweeteners to your food, or choose glucose or table sugar when you do add sweeteners.
